LTE, 4G and 4G+: differences explained simply

13 settembre 2026

When you see LTE, 4G or 4G+ on your phone, you are not looking at three completely different networks. These are labels linked to the same family of mobile connections, but with different performance levels and technologies. Understanding the difference is useful if you want to know what to expect in terms of speed, streaming, maps and hotspot use, especially when you travel.

Let’s start with the simplest point: 4G is the “commercial” name for the fourth generation of mobile network. LTE, which stands for Long Term Evolution, is the technology that made 4G possible in most cases. For this reason, in everyday use, LTE and 4G are often treated as synonyms, even though they do not always match 100% technically.

On many smartphones, LTE appears instead of 4G simply because of a choice made by the manufacturer or carrier. For the user, very little changes: you are still using a fast mobile network, suitable for browsing, video calls, social media, streaming and travel apps.

The situation changes with 4G+. This refers to an evolution of traditional 4G. 4G+ uses a technique called band aggregation: in simple terms, the phone combines several “lanes” of the network to increase speed and capacity. The result is often a faster and more stable connection, especially in crowded places such as airports, stations or city centres.

- LTE: indicates the mobile network of the fourth generation in its most common basic form - 4G: general label used by carriers and smartphones for the same network family - 4G+: more advanced version of 4G, with potentially higher speeds

In real-world use, here’s what you may notice:

- with LTE or 4G, you can browse, use maps and watch videos smoothly in most situations - with 4G+, downloads can be faster and the network may handle congestion better - the difference also depends on coverage, carrier, smartphone and how many people are connected at the time

There is also an important point for people using an eSIM while travelling: the label you see on your screen depends not only on your phone, but also on the local partner network. So you might see LTE in one country and 4G in another, even with similar performance. With a SIMAMMA eSIM, for example, the available network varies depending on the destination and the supported carriers.

In short, there is no need to chase the “perfect” label. If you see LTE or 4G, in most cases you are on a good mobile network. If 4G+ appears, you probably have an extra gear, especially for speed and traffic handling.
